I plan to stop too for the New Year. I hate everything about them. The smell the taste so i don't even understand why i continue to smoke but they seem to have some hold over me. I honestly think its a mind thing. I have given up loads of times before but keep going back if something stressful happens. I can give up, i just can't stay off them.
Having an open mind and telling yourself over and over that they wont have the control anymore might help you. It does for me, just after a while i forget to tell myself that anymore and end up going back on them.

Hello, Happy New Year. I was beginning to think that I was the only one on this site. I'm glad to see that I'm not.
I quit on November 30th and am still smoke free. I too have quit many times in the past (once for 12 years, yes 12 years). I think the trick is not to get complacent. You have to keep telling yourself that these things are bad for you and that if you have "just one", it effectively means that you are smoking again because in reality just one will become just one once too often and before you know it you'll be buying them again. It's relatively easy to stay off them for the first few weeks or even months but some day, out of the blue, you'll get a craving when your guard is down. It's at times like these that it's most important that you don't yield to the pressure. At that stage you will have forgotten why they are so bad for you and all the things you hated about them so it's important to have a strategy for these times. I don't know what that might be or whether it's different for everyone but it's something you need to plan for and be ready when it happens. I only hope I am.
BTW I am on NiQuitin CQ clear pathes at present and find them very effective.
Mick.

I'm on the NiQuitin patches aswell. I can't really say if they're working yet or not, I've never really tried to give up. Any time I tried I always caved after a few days. Maybe the patches will work, the urge to smoke is a bit less than last few times I've stopped. Anyone have any tips? I hear about tips for cravings like drinking a glass of water, etc, but I don't get cravings - just an ever increasing urge to have a smoke!

oh my God this is hard, im drinking water and feel ready to explode, im also using the inhaler, not much as i dont want to get addicted to that aswell. i knew it would be hard and its helps to see the graph on how many gigs "not" smoked and also the money saved, so i guess its me and willpower!!

Best of luck Fini. The nicotine will be gone from your system 48 hours after you give up so might be easier. Fair play to ya. I need the patches.

I'm a week off now and have to say it's definitely getting easier. Sometimes though, a craving will just creep up on me and it's a struggle to get through those parts of the day.

Hi all,

How're you all doing as non-smokers. I'm coming to the end of my 7th week and have packed in the patches. I'm getting on ok without them.
I almost had a relapse last week. I was skiing in Austria and dislocated my left shoulder on the second day there. Had to come home a week early. The urge to smoke was pretty strong at times but I persisted and am still smoke free.
For all of you who've quit in the last couple of weeks, it does get easier but beware the sneaky cravings that pounce when you least expect. It can happen anytime so be ready and don't give in. Remember, "just one" is never enough.
Mick.
